Homeroom is a homeschool planning and record-keeping service from The Academy of Chaos. This policy explains what we collect, how we use it, and the choices available to the adult who manages a Homeroom family account.

The short version

Homeroom is built to help a family plan lessons, track work, and keep records in one place. We do not sell personal information, run advertising, or use third-party advertising trackers. We do use information needed to run and improve Homeroom. That may include developing, testing, and training Homeroom's products and AI features, subject to the Google Calendar exception below.

Information we collect

  • Account and family information: family name, parent or teacher name, email address, password hash, subscription status, and account settings.
  • Homeschool records: student names, optional PINs and avatars, subjects, lessons, schedules, grades, notes, attendance-related records, reports, exports, and other information entered into Homeroom.
  • Community information: display names, avatars, posts, replies, messages, and notifications created in the Homeroom support center.
  • AI feature inputs: text, lesson context, and images that an adult submits to an optional AI helper, such as photo import, worksheet feedback, writing feedback, quick log, or catch-up assistance.
  • Service and security information: device and browser information, sign-in and security events, and error or usage information needed to operate, protect, and troubleshoot the service.
  • Payment information: payment and subscription details handled by our payment provider. Homeroom does not store full payment-card numbers.

How we use Homeroom data

We may use information other than Google User Data to:

  • provide, secure, support, maintain, and administer Homeroom;
  • create the records, reports, exports, and optional calendar sync you ask us to create;
  • communicate about your account, service changes, security, and support;
  • prevent fraud, misuse, and technical problems; and
  • analyze, improve, develop, test, evaluate, and train Homeroom's products, services, and AI capabilities.

Where practical, we may use aggregated or de-identified information for improvement and training. The training permission in our Terms of Service applies to Homeroom data that is not Google User Data.

Google Calendar data: a separate, limited rule

Google Calendar sync is optional. If you connect it, Homeroom uses the calendar.app.created permission to create Homeroom-managed calendars and keep the lesson events on those calendars in sync. Homeroom cannot view, edit, or delete calendars or events that it did not create.

We use Google User Data only to provide and improve this visible, user-requested calendar-sync feature. We do not sell it, use it for advertising, or use it to create, train, or improve a generalized artificial intelligence or machine-learning model. Disconnecting Google Calendar stops future sync; events already placed in Google Calendar remain there unless you remove them in Google Calendar. If we ever materially change how we use Google User Data, we will notify affected users and obtain consent before making that new use.

Homeroom's use of information received from Google APIs will adhere to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.

When we share information

We share information only as needed to run Homeroom: with service providers that host the app and database, process payments, send email, provide optional AI processing, or help us operate and secure the service. We may also disclose information when required by law, to protect people or the service, or as part of a merger, financing, acquisition, or sale of assets. We do not sell personal information or share it for cross-context behavioral advertising.

AI inputs are sent to an AI processing provider only when an adult chooses an AI feature. The helper returns a draft or suggestion; it does not make changes to a family's records without the parent's approval.

Children and family information

Homeroom accounts are for parents, guardians, teachers, and other adults authorized to manage a family's records. Students use the service under an adult-managed family account; they do not create independent Homeroom accounts. The adult who provides student information is responsible for having the authority and permissions needed to do so.

Security, retention, and your choices

We use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards to protect information. For example, Google refresh tokens are encrypted at rest. No system is perfectly secure, so please use a strong password and keep student PINs and private calendar-feed links private.

We keep information for as long as reasonably needed to provide Homeroom, maintain backups, meet legal and accounting obligations, resolve disputes, protect the service, and support the uses described here. You can export your family's Homeroom records from Settings. For an account or data-deletion request, contact us through the Homeroom support center or The Academy of Chaos.

Changes and contact

We may update this policy as Homeroom changes. The effective date at the top tells you when it was last revised. Material changes will be posted here. Questions about this policy can be sent through the Homeroom support center or The Academy of Chaos.
